01 — The First Cup
by Novel GroveOn the morning he opened the café, Dev forgot to unlock the door. He polished the counter, arranged six cups, and waited forty minutes before an elderly man tapped the window and pointed at the sign.
'A useful first lesson,' the man said when Dev let him in. 'People do like to enter a business.'
He ordered plain tea and sat at the smallest table. Dev brought a biscuit on the house. The man broke it neatly in two and placed half on the empty plate across from him.
'Expecting someone?' Dev asked.
'Always.'
By noon, the café had welcomed a student with wet shoes, a nurse coming off a night shift, and a boy buying coffee for his mother. Nobody asked Dev why he had left his old job. Nobody wanted him to explain the quiet sadness he was learning to carry.
At closing time, the elderly man paid for two teas. 'Tomorrow,' he said, touching the empty cup. Dev nodded and made a note to unlock the door.
