They left before sunrise, following a road that appeared on no official map. The guildmaster carried a bag of bread. Isha carried the key and a growing list of questions.

'Maps are agreements,' he told her. 'People agree where things are, and eventually the world stops arguing. But some places never agreed.'

At the top of the pass, they found a stone arch. Through it, the valley was green with summer. Around it, snow lay knee deep. A fox watched them from the other side, wearing a red ribbon around its neck.

Isha searched the arch for a keyhole. There was none.

'It doesn't open doors,' the guildmaster said. 'It opens choices.'

She closed her eyes and thought of the road she had mistaken months earlier: the strange trees, the unfamiliar stars, the feeling that the world had been waiting for her to notice it.

When she opened her eyes, the fox had bowed. Beyond the arch, a thousand roads began to shine.
