01 — A Package with No Address
by Novel GroveThe package arrived at the courier guild with no address, no postage, and a note that read: Deliver to the person most likely to get lost. The guildmaster handed it to Isha without hesitation.
'I took one wrong turn,' she protested.
'You came back from another country.'
Inside the package was a key made of dark glass. It was warm, although the morning was cold. Along its edge, tiny letters shifted whenever she looked away.
Isha held it against the light. For a moment the walls of the guildhall disappeared. Beyond them lay a mountain pass, an impossible blue lake, and a city whose towers were hanging upside down from the clouds.
Then the view was gone. In her hand, the key had become an ordinary piece of iron. The guildmaster stopped smiling.
'Where did you say you got lost?' he asked. Before she could answer, every compass in the room pointed toward her.
